• The courage to participate? Patients’ views on experimental neuroscience

  This PhD will investigate the experience of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease through the employment of qualitative research methods. Research will focus upon participants’ beliefs and attitudes towards formal participation in cutting edge clinical trials, and informal pursuit of effective and possibly unregulated therapies. The project will seek to match the empirical evidence obtained against the current and classic literature on the ethics of involving patients in early stage research. As a project in empirical ethics, the data will be subject to social scientific analysis in order to inform and develop normative conclusions.

  Zur Durchführung der vom BMBF geförderten Klausurwoche „Cognitive Enhancement“ im Februar/März 2011 ist zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt für die Dauer von einigen Monaten die Stelle eines wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiters bzw. einer wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterin und/oder einer ungeprüften wissenschaftlichen Hilfskraft (HiWi) zu besetzen.

  Die Tätigkeit umfasst neben Unterstützung bei der Vorbereitung, Organisation und Durchführung der Klausurwoche auch die Mitarbeit beim Erstellen des Tagungsbandes. Dies erfordert sehr gute Englischkenntnisse.

• Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Moral Cognition

  At the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and the Oxford Centre for Neuroethics

  The Research Fellow’s primary role will be to conduct research for the project, by studying the philosophical and ethical implications of scientific accounts of morality, and will also be an integral part of the Oxford Centre for Neuroethics. In addition to research responsibilities, s/he will be expected to contribute in other ways which may include, for example, involvement in conference or other event organisation and editing a collected volume.

  The successful candidate will have a strong academic background in one or more of the following:

  1. moral philosophy or a branch of ethics
  2. philosophy of mind/psychology/neuroscience,
  3. empirical research on moral decisionmaking;

  and an outstanding research record. By the date of appointment, applicants will be expected to have received (or submitted their thesis for) the degree of PhD (or equivalent).
