Voraussetzungen The course will be run in English (wobei die organisatorischen Sachen auf Deutsch geregelt werden).
Gegenstand der Veranstaltung ... is a short and readable volume by Alasdair MacIntyre and Paul Ricoeur titled The Religious Significance of Atheism. The topic of our Proseminar will be the philosophical analysis of rival ethical and religious traditions, understood in the context of the breakdown of Christian ethical norms and the increasing diversity of attitudes toward religion in Western society. To that end we will observe how MacIntyre and Ricoeur use various (socio-historical and hermeneutical) methods to address these issues. At the same time, a critique of the validity and effectiveness of these methods should also form part of our discussions.
Inhaltliches/Methodisches Vorgehen The respective methods employed by MacIntyre and Ricoeur will be briefly addressed, and their essays in this volume compared. Students interested in the social and/or linguistic analysis of moral and religious behaviour will be encouraged to make class presentations on a related theme.
Didaktische Vorgehensweise Students will be given the opportunity to express themselves and submit papers in English or German. However, the course is not intended as an Űbung for learning English – it is a Proseminar that focusses on ethics and the philosophy of religion.
